The Georgia Dawgs have lost their swagger, and it falls on the coaches more than the players. Have we forgotten how to tackle? What happened to our beloved defense? It started last year and has grown worse this year. The Dawgs body language said "we're whipped" early in the 2nd half of the Georgia-Florida game.
There have been way too many attempted arm tackles and no where near enough solid hits. It is as if the Georgia D wants to strip the ball every play rather than deliver a run stopping hit. We have exceptional athletes, yet every game has been an adventure. There have also been some really ugly games this year and the one against Florida was one of them.
On the Urban Meyer fine of $30,000.00 for criticizing the much maligned SEC officiating this season, it is my not so humble opinion that the SEC and Mike Slive are going down the same idiotic road that NASCAR began by fining their drivers, owners and crews. On the other hand, Urban Meyer needs to follow protocol and express his displeasure through proper channels. The same goes for Dan Mullens of Mississippi State and Bobby Petrino of Arkansas. Protocol guys, protocol. Protect the image of the SEC first, then indulge your personal grievances.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)- With all the negative attention "weighing heavy on his heart," Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes asked to serve a full-game suspension for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of a Georgia running back.
Coach Urban Meyer obliged, saying Wednesday that it was in the top-ranked Gators' best interest that Spikes sit out Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.
"I really don't want to be a distraction to the team," Spikes said after practice. "I want the guys to prepare without any negative things going on, and I feel like if I would play, it would be a big thing going on. I'm just trying to stay out of the way and just motivate the guys."
Meyer had faced some criticism for only suspending his star defender for the first half of the Vandy game. The Southeastern Conference accepted the original punishment.
Spikes stuck his hand into the facemask of Georgia's Washaun Ealey during Florida 41-17 victory against the Bulldogs. There was no penalty called at the time, but after talk about the play spread, Meyer reviewed it and decided to punish Spikes.
Meyer, Spikes and defensive coordinator Charlie Strong agreed to increase the punishment.
"A lot of the negative things out there really weighing heavy on his heart right now and so we thought that, as a group, we decided the best interest just for the team to not play him Saturday," Meyer said. "It was a group decision and we're doing it out of respect to our team so we can focus on trying to win our ninth game.
"We think it's the right thing to do. We support Brandon fully and we look forward to get back and finish the season the right way."
Spikes is fourth on the team with 42 tackles and has three sacks.
He considered entering the NFL draft in January, but decided to return for his senior season in hopes of helping Florida win a third national title in four years.
But he's battled injuries all season. He missed time early in the season because of an Achilles' tendon injury, and sat out most of two games because of a strained groin. He played only a series against Arkansas on Oct. 17 and sat out the entire game the following week.
He returned against Georgia and finished with a team-high 10 tackles. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
What he did to Ealey, though, overshadowed one of his best games of the season. Meyer said Spikes was retaliating for things that happened earlier in the game.
Ealey defended Spikes on Tuesday, saying he didn't believe he should have been suspended. Ealey also said he was surprised the play drew so much attention.
Fifth-year senior Ryan Stamper is expected to replace Spikes in the starting lineup.
"I'm pretty sure that Stamper got my back, and my teammates really support this decision" Spikes said.

#1 Florida Tripped Up on Halloween
The Georgia Bulldogs will roll into Jacksonville and trip up the #1 Florida Gators on Halloween night. On the Gator side of the game, the speedy Jeff Demps will be back to spark the offense, as well as the much missed defensive leader, Brandon Spikes. The Dawgs will be coming into the contest with two weeks of rest and preparation for annual cocktail party. I look for the Dawgs to be hungrier and hand the Gators their first loss of the season.
Lane Kiffin of Tennessee, was reprimanded by the SEC following his public comments on Sunday regarding officiating in last Saturday's loss to Alabama. Kiffin complained Sunday that officials failed to penalize Alabama's Terrence Cody for unsportsmanlike conduct when the defensive lineman removed and threw his helmet after blocking a field goal on the last play of Alabama's 12-10 victory Saturday.
Kiffin should have phoned the commissioners office and then followed up by letter rather than going public. Protocol Kiffin, protocol. The moment Alabama recovered the ball, possession changed and the penalty would have been a dead ball foul. Regardless of that, there was only four seconds on the clock, and from toe to ball, more than four seconds expired before the helmet was removed.
If kiffin was going to complain about officiating, he should have filed his complaint and made his point on the 'no-calls' on the Alabama defense. The Alabama linebackers and secondary did everything but mug the Tennessee receivers and there was never a call by the striped shirts. I can hear the "Bama fans crying foul now, and pointing to the 'no-call' in the end zone whereby they think,(from the boos in the stadium), that their receiver was fouled. If there was a foul that needed to be called on that play, it should have been offensive pass interference as well as a personal foul for throwing an elbow to the chin of the Tennessee defender. Just my thoughts on the subject.

The South Eastern Conference Suspended Officiating Crew
The South Eastern Conference suspended the officiating crew of the Georgia-LSU and the Arkansas-Florida football games. The same crew worked both games and made blatant bad calls that may have affected the outcome of both games. These bads calls were not supported by video evidence.
I have chosen to stay out of this argument as my team was a part of it. The officiating in the Georgia-LSU game was hideous. Someone was robbed and someone escaped.
The following week was as ugly from an officiating standpoint, but it certainly didn't alter the outcome. Tennessee was better prepared, hungrier and far better coached than were the Dawgs. I love my Dawgs anyway, but that was one ugly whoopin'.
Alabama was the recipient of some mighty favorable calls in the contest with South Carolina. No one needed prior knowledge as to who was the home team, as some of the calls made in that game left little doubt who the refs favored. In the end though, it wasn't the bad calls so much as it was the powerful 4th quarter running of Alabama's Mark Ingram. Ingram finished the day with 246 rushing yards. Still though, one has to consider favorable as well as momentum stealing calls, and then the issue with the Tide's field goals. It seems the refs overlooked Leigh Tiffin marking the field with white tape for placement of the ball on his field goal attempts. Those 5 yard penalties were never called.
"I heard that was not supposed to happen, you're not supposed to use anything like that," Spurrier said. "I guess Alabama didn't know it was against the rules. They said you're not supposed to use anything to spot the ball there. I don't know if they knew it was illegal or legal but they dang sure did it last week. It looked funny watching the tape. Maybe they thought it was permissible. Maybe the kicker did it on his own. I don't know."
"We certainly don't want our players to do anything that's illegal," Saban said. "It is a 5-yard penalty if you do anything to enhance the spot. We've done some research on it, and over half the teams in the league do something with it. They put a piece of grass there or a piece of mud wherever it is, so the kicker knows where the ball will be spotted. We even saw verification where last year South Carolina's kicker did it."
As much as I love to hate Steve Spurrier (it is mutual you know), I have to say that I also admire Steve Spurrier. I admire Steve personally in that he is a fierce competitor with a great desire to win, and that Steve is a straight shooter. More often than not, I don't agree with Steve's take on things, yet I appreciate him for sharing his point of view on whatever it is that might need to be said.
Saban is a different story. He has the ability to be a great coach, but I do not respect the man. Rather than admit that an error was made and move on to correct it, he reacted in a sly way, much like a smile that does not touch the eyes.
Arkansas-Florida. Arkansas was robbed and Florida escaped. I admired Urban Meyer for making a stand when he saw the bad calls in the Georgia-LSU game, but I am not surprised that he did not express the same remorse for the calls that went against Arkansas by the same officiating crew.
Those striped shirts need to sit far longer than the suspension that they received. Blatant favoritism cannot be tolerated at this level of play. The ineptness of this officiating crew rivals the antics of the crew involved in the infamous OU-Oregon game of a few years ago. Enough already, lighten up and let the players enjoy the enthusiasm that sets college athletics apart from professional sports.

South Eastern Conference (SEC) Poll Domination
I spent some time out of state and am glad to be back home again. What a week of football!
Once again, the mighty South Eastern Conference (SEC), dominates the polls. Three of the top 4 in both the AP and Coaches Polls belong to Florida, Alabama and LSU.
After a week of upsets where 4 teams in the top ten fell, the polls are still mystifying even to the casual observer. There are many questions left to be answered and I will address some of the obvious ones.
Do any of you feel there is an undercurrent of bias against the SEC?
Auburn 4-0, unranked. What is up with this? Auburn manned up and handled Va Tech 41-30. Va Tech escaped Liberty University and East Carolina and then was man-handled by Auburn. Last week, at home in the rain, Va Tech rained on the Miami Hurricanes. The pollsters rewarded Va Tech with a number 6 ranking in a big week of upsets while ignoring a 4-0 team that beat Va Tech (3-1). I just don't get the logic.
South Carolina 3-1, unranked. What does it take to impress the pollsters? You might ask what the 'Cocks have done this year. The 'Cocks have beaten two ranked teams and yet, remain unranked? The 'Cocks started the season by knocking off then number 21 NC State (3-1), a team that many thought would compete for the national championship. The Gamecocks then lost a thriller to number 23 Georgia. Go Dawgs! In their third game, the 'Cocks easily handled Florida Atlantic. Last week, the Gamecocks upended number 4 Ole Miss. I ask you, where is the love?
Rather than praise South Carolina for their victory, the TV personalities and pundits immediately denounced Ole Miss as not being a true #4 team worthy of their ranking. Where were these same pundits when #5 Penn State fell to an unranked Iowa again, and #6 California was blown out by the Ducks of Oregon, 42-3? A 3-1 Oregon team beats #6 Cal and is rewarded with an AP ranking at #16 and a #25 ranking by the Coaches Poll. A very deserving previously unranked Iowa squad (4-0), was rewarded with an AP ranking at #13 and a Coaches Poll ranking at #17. I cannot help wondering why two deserving SEC teams were left out of the mix.
Then there is the Big East, a much aligned conference with two 4-0 teams. Cincinnati with an AP rank of #10 and Coaches rank at #11, is an exciting team to watch. These guys have character and play great ball. South Florida, knocked off #18 Florida State in Tallahassee and is another deserving 4-0 squad that remains unranked.
Wisconsin is another fine program at 4-0. unranked. Does Wisconsin play more cupcakes than Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State? Wisconsin is a solid team that goes bowling every year. Where is the respect?
The Broncos of Boise State are #5 in both polls and are proof that we need a playoff in place of the BCS. I'm convinced that these guys can play good ball with anyone and that any team can lose on any given game day.
It is time to settle the championship on the field of play rather than in some arbitrary popularity poll.
SEC INJURY REPORTS
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Tim Tebow
Coach Urban Meyer said Monday that his star quarterback was feeling better and eating well two days after sustaining a concussion at Kentucky. Although Tebow still has "a little bit of a headache," Meyer hopes he will be able to play when the top-ranked Gators (4-0) return to the field Oct. 10 at LSU.
"I think so, but I don't know that," Meyer said.
The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner was put through a battery of tests Monday and was scheduled for more Tuesday, Meyer said. Meyer said he did not know what grade concussion Tebow has.
"Tim's doing good," Meyer said. "All the tests are coming back positive and I'm going to leave it up to the medical staff to update you guys because I don't want to give you information I don't know. But he's doing good. I talk to him all the time. Feeling better."
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Dont'a Hightower
The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Hightower(torn ACL), a sophomore was an immediate starter a year ago.
The versatile Hightower was a force on the run but Saban also called him the team's best pass rusher. He lined up at defensive end at times.
"I don't know that you can replace a guy that does all the things that he did," Saban said.
Hightower was injured when Arkansas guard Mitch Petris went low on a legal cut block, and his helmet banged into the linebacker's knee.
McClain didn't take issue with the block, but doesn't like the fact that it is allowed.
"It's legal. You can't say that it was a dirty play on the guy," McClain said. "But for me just being a linebacker, I would rather the guy just come and try to block me man to man. I hate that guys cut, but it is a part of the game. It's something that we practice. "
Hightower had 16 tackles, four of them for a loss, and was credited with a sack and two quarterback hurries.
"He's a force in the middle and when he gets on the edge, he wreaks havoc," McClain said. "It's hard for people to stop him, period.

Football: Hurricanes Blow Past The Ramblin' Wreck
Georgia Tech started the game running at will on Miami and took an early 3 point lead. Tech looked as if they would blow the 'Canes out of their own stadium.
Enter Jacory Harris. The super soph is finally living up to early expectations. Jacory went 20 of 25 for 270 passing yards and the 'Canes outgained the Jackets
454 yards to 228.
The Miami defense was absolutely awesome. The 'Canes D held the potent Tech running game to a team low minus 23 yards. Hi 5's for the Miami D. You guys have character.
Final Score: No. 20 Miami over No. 14 Ga. Tech, 33-17.
Do they play football in Alaska? Ran across this Video of Sarah Palin's daughter.

Week 2 Football
Hello everyone. Hope that you all had a great weekend. My wife & I love college football. We had a blast. Our team won. Go Dawgs!
The game itself, South Carolina vs Georgia was the most entertaining game I have ever seen. The game had most everything except a Hail Mary
Steve Spurrier, the Gamecock's coach has a "thang" about UGA. From his playing days to present, the man hates UGA. It is OK. It's mutual.
The thing is, Steve Superior puts on a show, his sideline antics are almost as much fun to watch as the game.Glad Steve is back in the SEC !
It was like losing an old time friend when Steve took a few years off to go coach in the pros. No offense Lou, but you ain't no Spurrier
Lou Holtz is another great coach with a thang about UGA. It ain't no big thang Lou, it is just a thang. Get over it, put your bias down.
Too many people get way too serious about college ball. Remember, those young men are just kids out playing ball and having fun.
What I really want you to know Lou, is that you are not a coach now. You are a professional sports prognosticator; leave the bias at home.
Man, what is up with Ohio state? Woody Hayes can't be getting much rest these days. I thought Tressel was going to open it up this year.
High 5's to Toledo, Cincinnati, BYU, Boise State and Central Michigan. We can still have our bowls, but it is about time to have a playoff.
Texas! Man, at number two, you had me worried. The 'pokes acted like they wanted to poke a hole in your bubble. Great 'horns 2nd half!
Still though, high 5 to Wyoming. Man, you guys have talent and character. Great showing against the #2 in the country!
